The Perfect Desktop Companion

Like a lot of people, I LOVE a nice hot cup of coffee to get my weekday mornings going. However I am the only one in my house that drinks coffee, so making a large pot is not worth the hassle, time or money. Even the small 4-cup pots tend to be a bit much for me. What I needed was a nice single-cup brewer without the huge price tag and I found it!

Just before Christmas, I was  cruising around Walmart and saw these adorable single-serve coffee pot by Hampton Beach (HB). The first time I saw them, I "Ohhhh-ed" and "Awww-ed" and swore that I need one. But eventually left them on the shelves thinking it would be another one of those items that I would hardly ever use. However when I went back, I thought they may make a great gift for someone else. So for under $10 a piece, I picked two; one black and one white. Needless to say, everyone got great gifts, just not coffee makers!

Normally, when I'm at work and I want coffee, I'd just use my coworkers Keurig or I would walk a block and half over to Starbucks. However my coworker got a new job, so the Keurig is no longer with us and Starbucks prices are just crazy, plus in the winter, the walk is not a pleasant. There is a McDonald's and other places that sells coffee but nothing that really tickles my fancy.

So I brought the black HB coffee makers to my office. What an awesome idea that was. Its the perfect size for my desk. It only takes about 4-ish minutes to brew, and requires very little clean up compared to a regular coffee brewer. I love it.

It stands about 8 inches tall, about 4 inches wide and about 8 inches deep. It's footprint is smaller than my phone, my calculator and my pencil sharpner!  Also, the black color and silver trim, in addition to the small size, allows it to blend in nicely with everything else on my desk. My co-workers hardly notice that its there until they get close (or smell the coffee brewing).

Speaking of brewing, it only takes about 4 minutes and half a bottle of water to brew a cup. For me its about 5 minutes and 1 bottle of water, start to finish. My normal morning process goes like this:

Grab bottle of water. Grab pod filter. Insert pod into brewer. Pour water into brewer. Put cup on brewer. Press Start. Grab bowl. Grab oatmeal. Go back and grab spoon. Mix oatmeal and most of remaining water in bowl. Drink remaining water. Put bowl in microwave. Set microwave to 3 minutes. Press start. Grab butter. Stare at microwave. Grab creamer. Stare at microwave. (((DING!))) Open microwave. Grab bowl. Burn hand. Curse under breath. Add butter to hot oatmeal. Grab coffee cup. Add creamer. Sip Coffee. Burn lip. Eat oatmeal. Enjoy Coffee.
That's my morning process - quick and easy.  But the easiest part for me - clean up. Just trash the pod and done! No pots to mess with. No messy filter to remove. With my traditional coffee brewer,to remove the fileter I had to carefully fold it into random origami shapes before lifting it out so that the coffee grinds did not end up decorating the floor. Then pour out all the waisted coffee (and money) and wash out the pot or load it into the dishwasher. Not too bad. But if I was at work, where I drink the most coffee, I would have go through the same origami folding proecess and then lug everything to a sink and wash it out by hand. Which is not as easy at it sound; one of the doors that I have to go through has a double-latch lock, so you need both hands, your feet and a very flexible partner to open it.  But with the HB brewer, just a simple flick of the wrist and clean up is done. I also take a few extra seconds to wipe down the underside of the brewer where the water pours out and inside the pod holder itself. I find it collects a bit of condensation and since it sits on my desk, I dont want that extra moisture attracting any unwanted guest. I do the same at home also.

All in all, I love this coffee maker. It feels as though they was thinking of me when they made it and I would recommend it to anyone that's looking for an easy, hassile free and quite stylish way to make a one cup of coffee at a time. You can find it on Amazon by clicking here!
